A Meditation on Almsgiving, by Fr. Thomas Hopko
Christ commanded his disciples to give alms. To "give alms" means literally "to do" or "to make merciful deeds" or "acts of mercy." According to the Scriptures, the Lord is compassionate and merciful, longsuffering, full of mercy, faithful and true. He is the one who does merciful deeds (see Psalm 103). Acts of mercy are an "imitation of God" who ceaselessly executes mercy for all, without exception, condition or qualification. He is kind to the ungrateful and the wicked. (Click to download Fr. Thomas' Reflection)
May God grant you a blessed lenten journey!
"...Beloved children in the Lord, upon entering the arena of Holy and Great Lent, we paternally exhort you not to be afraid or lazy in assuming the most important task of your life, namely the spiritual arena of work. Instead, be courageous and strong, so that you may purify your souls and bodies of all sin in order to reach the Kingdom of God, which is granted already from this life to those who seek it with sincerity and with all their soul..."

Sunday of Orthodoxy "Pan-Orthodox" Vespers
Annunciation Cathedral - Sunday, March 13, 2010, 6:00 p.m.
What a beautiful Pan-Orthodox Vespers we experienced as "One, Holy, Catholic, and Apostolic Church" on Sunday evening, March 13th at Annunciation Cathedral! We commend our Metropolis Cathedral, its clergy, Fr. Paul Kaplanis, Dean, and Fr. Christos Mars, Ephemerios, as well as its Parish Council President, Stephen Georgeson and Parish Administrator, Ginnie Roglin, for overseeing the hosting of all of our Orthodox faithful in the Atlanta metropolitan area. It was a unique opportunity for us to join together, and with His Grace Bishop John of Amorion (on behalf of His Eminence Metropolitan Alexios) officiating, we were able to shine the light of our Lord's truth and His Orthodox Church in a very personal way. I pray our Lord continue to strengthen and encourage us in our Lenten journey and ask your prayers always. We commend Fr. Jacob Myers, our Clergy Syndesmos President, for communicating with our clergy and laity and ensuring everyone was welcome. +Fr. George Tsahakis
On Sunday evening, March 13, 2011, just minutes before we celebrated the "Pan-Orthodox Vespers for the Sunday of Orthodoxy," we learned that His Eminence Metropolitan Nicholas of Amissos of the Carpatho-Russian Church, fell asleep in the Lord earlier that day, on the occasion of the 28th anniversary of His Consecration to the Episcopacy. Following Vespers, His Grace Bishop John of Amorion, joined by 15 of our Atlanta Orthodox Clergy, offered a Trisagion Service in His memory. May His Memory Be Eternal!

Family Night Series Has Moved to Wednesdays of Great Lent
Join Us for our Next Session, Wednesday, March 23, 2011 6:45 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. (following 9th Hour/Presanctified Liturgy)
Parishioners are invited to join us with their families, as we continue our monthly “Family Night” series on the Wednesdays of Lent. Join us as we offer our annual lenten pot-luck supper and continuing special program using the text, Heaven on Earth to bring us greater understanding of the Divine Liturgy we celebrate together each Sunday and during many of the weekdays throughout the year.
To date, we have reviewed three and one-half of the six units of our text: “Liturgy is Worship”, “Liturgy is Unity”, and "Liturgy is Prayer." In our 5th lesson planned for March 23rd, we will continue our focus on “Liturgy is Scriptural” which we began last week, and Fr. George will explain how the Bible and Divine Liturgy are products of the Church, demonstrate that the roots of liturgical practices are found in the Old Testament, connect the statements of the Creed to Scripture, and integrate daily Bible Study and weekly worship with our Orthodox lectionary. On March 30th, he will review “Liturgy is Forgiveness” and recognize the difficulty of repentance and forgiveness in daily life, understand that forgiveness is central in the lives of Orthodox Christians, and explain the abundance and depth of forgiveness that is in the liturgy. On April 13th, “After the Liturgy” will help us connect the Sunday Divine Liturgy to weekly life; understand that becoming God-centered is a lifelong process, and look for ways to do God’s work through daily life.
Follow the Journeys of St. Paul Series (New!) Come join your fellow parishioners as we emulate the journeys of St. Paul the Apostle . . . by meeting at four of our parish family homes, once each month, beginning in March, and continuing through June. For each of the four sessions, we will gather from 5:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. for drinks and fellowship, followed by a thirty minute overview from Fr. George of one of St. Paul ’s missionary messages to the early Christians. Bring your Bibles (and a couple extra folding chairs) as he highlights the Book of Acts and selected Epistles of St. Paul.
At 6:00 p.m. we will share our “pot-luck” dinner provided by those parishioners in attendance, and we will finish our session no later than 7:30 p.m. [Note: Fourth session will be from 3:00 p.m. – 5:30 p.m. since it will be offered outdoors.]

As a parish, we are blessed to have a dedicated group of Philoptochos members who serve our local, Metropolis, and Archdiocese Charities. At its January 16th meeting, members reviewed the following support efforts for 2010. Glory to God for guiding us to assist those in need. We pray for their welfare and ask that you support our future endeavors.

The Metropolis has received an urgent plea from our St. Nektarios Church in Charlotte, NC, to share the critical need by one of our faithful there who is battling lymphoma. She is in need of a donor stem cell transplant and asked if we could appeal to our Metropolis parishes to increase the pool of donors to find her a match. If a match is found, it quite possibly could save her life. For more information please click here.
